What happens in your body during the luteal phase
After ovulation, your body enters a phase where progesterone rises — then drops sharply if fertilisation hasn’t happened. That drop, combined with falling estrogen, drives most premenstrual symptoms.
It’s not “in your head”. It’s biochemical.
💡 Did you know? When progesterone falls, serotonin follows. That’s why everything feels harder the week before your period — your brain chemistry is literally different.
The most common symptoms
- Deep fatigue — your body burns more energy maintaining the uterine lining.
- Irritability and mood swings — serotonin drops alongside estrogen.
- Bloating — progesterone slows digestion.
- Sugar cravings — your body is looking for fast energy.
- Breast tenderness — hormonal water retention.
What to eat in the luteal phase
Prioritise:
- Complex carbohydrates (sweet potato, brown rice, oats) to stabilise blood sugar
- Magnesium-rich foods (85% dark chocolate, spinach, pumpkin seeds)
- Protein at every meal to support serotonin production
- Anti-inflammatory omega-3s (sardines, flaxseed)
Reduce:
- Salt (water retention)
- Caffeine (amplifies anxiety and breast tenderness)
- Alcohol (disrupts sleep and estrogen metabolism)
- Refined sugar (blood glucose rollercoaster)
What to drink
- Ginger and lemon infusion (anti-bloating)
- Warm turmeric latte (anti-inflammatory)
- Lemon water in the morning (digestive support)
- No coffee after noon
How to move
The luteal phase is not the time to chase personal records. Your body needs gentleness.
- Slow or yin yoga
- Outdoor walking (30 minutes minimum)
- Light pilates
- Evening stretching to calm the nervous system
Skip the HIIT sessions, the intense workouts, the fitness challenges. You don’t lack willpower — you lack progesterone.
The luteal evening ritual
- A warm infusion
- 10 minutes of journaling — what am I feeling? what do I need?
- Stretching or 4-7-8 breathing
- In bed before 10:30pm
Slowing down isn’t giving up. It’s a hormonal strategy.
